  • Things That Contact Lens Wearers Should Avoid

Many lens wearers would have at one point in time forgotten to change the lens solution in the container, or perhaps would have put lenses on without washing their hands. However, it’s good to know why it’s important to avoid such incidents, and to make sure that wearers are caring for their lenses in the best way possible.

The hands are probably the dirtiest part of our bodies, as they come into contact with so many dirty things every day. If you forget to wash your hands before putting lenses on or taking them off, you may very well transfer various infection-causing germs on them and risk eye infections. So, it is vital that you wash your hands with soap that’s free of residues before handling your lenses.

Topping up yesterday’s solution is also not a good idea, as lenses soak in its germ-killing ingredients, and secondary use makes it less efficient in. Plus, don’t forget to rub the lens before storing it in the container, to remove any deposits that have accumulated during the day. One more thing is to make sure you wash the container thoroughly and then dry it with a towel, otherwise bacteria may settle on it.

A mistake that causes eye irritation and raises the risk of more serious infection is wearing the lenses for longer than prescribed. We easily forget that contacts are in fact medical devices, and if the optician says you should wear them for a month before getting a new pair, then that’s for how long you should wear them for.

Finally, steer clear of generic lens solutions, because their formulations are for the most part a decade old or so, and cannot be efficient enough for modern contacts. The best option is to ask your optician about which is the best solution for your particular lens brand.
