Special Effect CL: Don’t Forget Safety While Having Fun
What would horror, fantasy and sci-fi films be without special effect contact lenses (CL)? Certainly not as exciting and impressive! Special effect contact lenses have been used in films since the 1930s and there was a time when their cost put them beyond the reach of ordinary people. However, these times are long gone and although special effect CL do cost more than regular contacts, they are quite affordable for the general public. But the fun and excitement of wearing such lenses must not overshadow the fact that general CL wear rules still apply and they should be followed for maximum safety.
According to an EyeHealthWeb article on special effect contact lenses, they are best avoided by people with astigmatism or those who are prescribed toric or bifocal lenses. Proper fitting is required even in the case of people who do not have a vision problem.
It goes without saying that the purchase must always be made from authorised dealers for the sake of safety. As with other types of contact lenses, it is essential to resist the temptation to swap or let friends try your contacts on. This can be especially hard in the case of special effect lenses as they are such great fun. This is even more important when you have prescription CL: lending them to another person could seriously damage their eyes.
Another key issue is proper care, which obviously includes cleaning and disinfection. The best thing to do is ask your eye care practitioner for a set of instructions to make sure that you have all the bases covered.
