It is a well-documented fact that fruit, particularly citrus fruit, help maintain healthy eyes. AllAboutVision has published an article featuring seven exotic fruits that, despite being less well-known, are equally as beneficial to the health of your eyes, as they contain high levels of antioxidants and vitamins.
The list kicks off with dragon fruit, which belongs to the cactus family. The bright colours make it a curious looking fruit, but it’s high vitamin C content makes it great for cornea protection.
The kiwano resembles a cucumber on the inside, and the green pulp found below the skin is rich in beta carotene. This compound also has eye surface protective powers and is essential for maintaining good night vision.
Buddha’s hand is aptly named: this fruit, from the citrus family, sports appendages that look like fingers. Leaving aside its odd appearance, the fruit contains plenty of vitamin C, making it very useful for eye health.
The mangosteen is similar to an orange as its juicy centre is made up of wedge-shaped segments. Among the numerous valuable nutrients contained in this fruit are B complex vitamins. According to the findings of a recent study, these vitamins can lower the risk of macular degeneration in women.
The jack fruit may not be pretty to look at but its thorny skin hides another great source of vitamin C. The same goes for the custard apple, which is also an excellent source of vitamin B and potassium.
Finally we have rambutan, whose merits include plenty of vitamin C and bioflavonoids; the latter are plant pigments that boast antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
