Allergies And Dirty Lenses Are The Main Causes Of Burning Eyes
Wearing contacts is normally a comfortable experience, and you may even forget you have them in your eyes. However, there are a few things that could cause a burning sensation, which could make wearing lenses very uncomfortable.
One of the reasons for this burning sensation is eye allergies. The most common causes are pollen, dust and animal dandruff. These accumulate under the lenses and irritate the eye, also causing redness and itchiness. If this is the cause for your irritation, your optician may recommend that you reduce the time in which you wear your lenses, or they may recommend switching to daily disposables.
Another reason for eye irritation in lens wearers is an ingredient, most commonly a preservative, in the lens solution. You could develop increased sensitivity even if you have been using the same solution for years. Switching to a preservative-free lens solution would relieve the symptoms.
The lenses themselves can also become the cause of irritation if they are dirty. No matter how regularly and thoroughly you clean them, protein still accumulates on their surface along with other debris, which decrease the access of oxygen through the lens and can cause irritation and burning. The solution to this is getting an additional lens cleaner or replacing the lenses at shorter intervals.
Dry eyes can also cause burning that is relieved by lubricating eye drops, sometimes combined with eye vitamins, depending on how serious your eye care professional judges your condition to be. A switch to another brand of lenses, specifically designed for people with dry eyes, is also a solution. A combination of treatments is possible as well, if there are multiple causes of irritation.
